I have a Kohler Forte’ K-10430, 3-hole installation, faucet, control valve, and sprayer. The water runs our the faucet for 2 seconds or, a little more after the control valve is turned off. I have replaced the cartridge with the identical Kohler part with minimal to no improvement. Any ideas?

Hi Randy,
Your comment leaves me with a few questions. The faucet you have with the high goose-neck style spout holds a lot of water in the spout above the aerator and with this design characteristic will take a moment to drain out after the faucet is shut off. Sometimes too the faucet may appear to shut off then after a little while, and some air entering, will suddenly drop a good sized slug of water.

Is the water flowing out of the spout after you shut the faucet off coming out at the same pressure and volume as when the faucet is on?

Is the aerator partially plugged with debris? Unscrew it off the end of the spout and check the screens and restrictor inside of the aerator. If they are clogged the spout will take longer to drain down.

Redwood,
The water does not come out at pressure when the control valve is turned off. It’s a slow trickle down to nothing. I though that as well, the distance between the valve and faucet and the aerator could be restricting the flow out. I’m going to check that now, thanks for the input. If it’s not the aerator I’m assuming I’ll just have to live with it.

Hi Randy,
I’ll say it definitely sounds like the goose-neck draining out after the faucet is shut off.
When I fix a faucet that has the goose-neck like that I usually take the aerator off while I check it for drips so I don’t have to wait there a long time to make sure the drip has stopped. Showerheads are another thing that can hold a lot of water and drip for a while fooling you.

Hi Tom,
Obviously there is something restricting the flow of water to the hot side of the faucet. I would start by checking if there is adequate water flow at the hot stop valve under the sink to determine which way to proceed. Disconnecting the supply line to the faucet and seeing how well the water flows out of the valve when you turn it back on. If the water flow is good there then disconnect at where the supply connects to the faucet and check there. and so on through the faucet to the cartridge.

If the supply at the stop valve under the sink is not enough then obviously you would have to chase back through the water supply in the home to find the restriction.

The restriction could be any number of things, a valve that doesn’t open properly, pipes occluded by rust scale, debris clogging somewhere such as part of a rubber washer from a valve gone bad, and even debris from a failing dip tube in the water heater causing the clogging. All you have to do is find where, and what it is.

Hello, Redwood…I have a Kohler Fairfax K-12177 faucet that is leaking (while running) out of a tiny “hole” in the back of the “upright shaft” (for lack of a better term…)of the faucet…I think that this little hole might be an “air release” or something…I was thinking that the black rubber o-ring might need replacing. Looking at the parts page of this model, I didn’t realize there were so many o-rings. Another problem is the first step is always to turn the water off. Well, there’s also a water-purifier spout, so when I look under the sink, there’s a set of on-off knobs to the left and another set of knobs right in the middle, then to the right is the purifier cartridge. To turn off the water supply, do I turn BOTH knobs there in the middle or do I turn one or both of the knobs to the left. (note: the water purifier spout up top is on the left of the sink.) So, what o-ring would I need and how do I turn the water off under the sink…on the left or middle?…then, both knobs or one or the other? I hope you understand what I’m trying to describe…and thank you.

Hi Janet,
It sounds like your faucet has a bad vacuum breaker, this is designed to that if you were to leave the pullout head of your faucet submerged in water in the sink and running, if water pressure was lost it would allow air to enter the faucet preventing the pullout from siphoning dirty water in the sink back into the water supply.

On Kohler’s Website it looks like they are currently calling this part a Spacer Assembly #1108711. The picture I show in my book and below is calling it a #1005215 Vacuum Breaker. Kohler likes to do that to us. There are probably 3 or 4 part revisions in between.

I suggest calling Kohler at 1-800-4-Kohler and they will send you the part whatever it may be currently, free under your warranty.

As for which valves you have to turn off, whichever ones connect to the 2 lines that supply the hot and cold water to the faucet are the ones that need to be turned off. Just follow the hot and cold lines from the faucet down to the valve.

I believe I have a Kohler K-10433 with pull out sprayer it sticks and is hard to move from side to side. I have removed the handle but can not get the bonnet off. I’m not sure how it is attached and have tried to turn it, and pry it loose but have not had any luck I’m scared to damage it. Also if and when I get it apart, I don’t have any place near by to the locate part, can you help please?

I thank you for your time,
Dale

Hi, I have a Kohler K10433 kitchen faucet and have experienced water leaking under the base and running down the hose under the sink. It only leaks when the faucet is turned on. Can’t tell if o-rings or valves are failing. How do I diagnose and fix?

Oh, one more thing , my wife says the faucet is incrementally harder to turn back and forth than it used to be.

Hi Rich,

The faucet being a pull-out style faucet says the o-ring under the spout is not the source of the water leak, however the #42043 o-ring and the #1038326 bearing are the cause of the hard to turn spout.

The water is contained in the #1114379 hose connected at the bottom of the valve all the way through the faucet body and out to the spray head so there are no parts in the spout which will cause a leak. I usually start by trying to find which end of the hose has the leak by pulling the spray head off the spout and putting the spray head in the sink on the bottom. When the spray head is in the faucet spout any leaking ends up under the sink, but pulled out and resting in the bottom of the sink puts the spray head lower than the spout with the water from a leak on that end unable to run up hill to come out under the sink. So if you still get water leaking down under the sink then you move your troubleshooting back to the faucet, and if the leaking is now out in the sink you look for your leak out at the hose and spray head.

On the hose and spray head end the #1114379 hose is a likely candidate for the leak as the hoses do take the most abuse, other possibilities include the #1036389 o-ring where the hose connects to the spray head or, the connection being lose. The spray head itself may also be leaking and allowing water to run back down the hose under the sink when the spray head is stowed in the spout.

If the leaking is on the faucet valve end the leak could at the end of the #1114379 hose or, the connection to the valve body. The leaking may also also be #GP1016515 cartridge itself leaking or the #1018336 nut being loose allowing the connections on the bottom of the cartridge to leak.

All you need to do is start by finding out which end of the hose you need to look at for the source of the leak and you’ll be well on your way. If you need any parts call 1-800-4-KOHLER and they will give you free parts under warranty.

Hope this helps,

Hi! I have the Kohler 12177 kitchen faucet. It is leaking out of a tiny hole on the rear of the stem. I called Kohler, told them the problem and they are sending the part. My question is this…I can not remove the handle. I removed the plastic cap, then the screw but the handle will not budge. Any ideas?? I am afraid if I force it, I might break something!!!!

Thanks!!

Hi Fred,
With the screw removed the handle should come off. It may require some rocking, wiggling, & pulling to get it off. If the end of the cartridge does break off then you will need additional parts such as the stem and handle.

I have a Kohler 10433 kitchen faucet. Was trying to investigate a leak, however, unable to remove the handle as the set screw was very tight. In trying to untighten, think I may have stripped the head. Any suggestions on how to remove the set screw? TIA.

Hi Chris,
I’d try a fresh allen wrench before doing anything more drastic. If that doesn’t work then you will probably have to drill out the screw to remove the handle.

I just put in a Kohler pull down kitchen faucet. The hot and cold water attach without leaks, but a huge spraying leak under sink where spray hose hooks up to copper tubing (snap on connection). I suspect there is a missing washer. I have tried washers that look right and seem to fit right, but the huge water gush continues. Temporarily I have electrical tape holding so I can sort of use the sink. What is wrong?

Hi Julie,
I can’t be sure exactly what is wrong, these Quick-Connect connectors usually easily clip in place. However, sometimes they are damaged while putting them on and they will not seal. On some brands I have had this happen to me and have managed to get the Quick-Connect Connector reassembled correctly and get the job finished, but it wasn’t an easy task. For a DIYer homeowner doing the work I would suggest calling 1-800-4-Kohler and get them to send you a free replacement connector under warranty as your best course of action. The risk of damage from a water leak under your kitchen counter is too great to suggest anything else.

Hi Richard,
You can remove the handle and try tightening the bonnet nut, After that you’ll probably need to call Kohler.
